August 2002

Where did the first half of the year go? A warm welcome from a not-so-warm Wellington. Isn’t it great to know the shortest day of the year is behind us!

This Chat Sheet reports on a busy time for HSC, including recent research activity on youth smoking, Auahi Kore events and Quit and Win 2002.

We were also delighted to learn, on World Smokefree Day, that HSC has received a World Health Organisation award for its contribution to making sport Smokefree. The award was one of five presented in the Western Pacific (Asia and the Pacific) region this year. It recognises work done during the 1990's buying out tobacco sponsorships and the pro-active “Making Sport Smokefree” activities of the last few years. We were overwhelmed to receive the award, but believe it also belongs to the many community-based Smokefree and Auahi Kore workers who have worked so hard in sporting environments. So, from us to you all, well done!

National Smokefree Conference
The National Smokefree Conference takes place on September 9 and 10, and registrations close on August 26. If you wish to attend, please register as soon as possible. As soon as we reach the venue limit, registrations will close. The cost of attending the conference only is $120, and the cost of attending the full-day research workshop on September 11 is $20. As the research workshop is now also a full day event, please make sure you tick the right box! Registration on the day will be subject to places available, and will be charged at $160 for the conference and $40 for the workshop. Payments should be made to HSC – please contact christine@healthsponsorship.co.nz for further information.

Smokefree Sport
Congratulations on all the fantastic regional work for World Smokefree Day. It was great to see a number of sports clubs opting to go Smokefree on or around this day.

As mentioned previously, we are keen to begin a database of Smokefree sports clubs nationwide. A comprehensive accurate list will require your input. It would be appreciated if you could forward MARIJA details of sports clubs in your region that are Smokefree, along with the appropriate contact details. Most importantly, please define the Smokefree status - is the club: (a) Smokefree inside at all times (if not, detail)? (b) Smokefree inside at all times and partially outside (detail)? (c) Smokefree inside and out at all times?

Resource price list attached.
This will be an ongoing project and the sooner we can get it up and running, the sooner it will be available for everyone to use for public relations purposes and to assist in creating more Smokefree sporting environments. Contact marija@healthsponsorship.co.nz.

The Play Breathe Live series has new resources, with hockey and league posters and stickers available to purchase (see front cover & resource list). We are also considering producing a T-shirt featuring the bright multi-sport image used on the ‘Let’s Clear the Air – Play Breathe Live Smokefree Sport’ World Smokefree Day poster. If this interests you, please let SHARDA know so we can ascertain initial quantity requirements.

We are also working on a new Smokefree Sport charter process and resource. Details will be passed on as they are finalised.

Most Smokefree Sport action is currently centred on netball, with the Smokefree Champs in Palmerston North just two months away. It’s great to see the rejuvenation of the kaupapa at grassroots level, with five netball entities working with their local health providers to promote the Smokefree message and develop Smokefree environments in their regions. Planning is underway for the remaining entities to come aboard for next season.

HSC also recently teamed up with New Zealand Rugby League to do a mail-out to rugby league clubs nationwide. The package included message endorsement from the national body, and suggested to clubs that they look at their Smokefree policies. The 'blue clubs book' was included and clubs were encouraged to contact their local public health provider if they wanted more information on becoming Smokefree. If any of these clubs are in contact with you, it would be great to hear it. Don’t forget there are new rugby league resources available to support this relationship.

Smokefree Arts recently became a company sponsor of Black Grace – New Zealand's leading exponent of Pacific contemporary dance. This relationship is a key component of Council's Smokefree Arts programme, where we aim to establish the Smokefree message as a positive part of the performing arts
culture in Aotearoa. “Black Grace & Friends: visions from three worlds”, which presents new work from three choreographers, Neil Ieremia, Taiaroa Royal and Daniel Belton, is the first event we’re involved in. Black Grace & Friends opens at Sky City theatre in Auckland on Wednesday August 7 and runs until August 11.

Hot on the heels of this production comes New Works, featuring new choreography from the members of Black Grace. New Works will have seasons in Wellington, Porirua, Hamilton, Papakura and central Auckland. Watch your local paper for details (or check the Smokefree Arts website).

Auahi Kore Panui ... (www.auahikore.co.nz)

Kia ora tatau te whanau. It's hard to believe we've passed the halfway mark for the year. Hopefully you've all seen the Auahi Kore calendar, developed to acknowledge both Matariki (Maori New Year) and all those positive Maori activities that support Auahi Kore.

The members’ section on the Auahi Kore website is now up and running. Key interactive features include a panui, message board, regional contact list and calendar of events. Please log on and check it out - www.auahikore.co.nz. We are always looking for feedback and ideas on how to make working together easier.

Upcoming events - we have an awesome partnership with a Maori theatre company called Taki Rua. They are about to start their Te Reo Maori season with a play called 'Te Aka Tawhito'. The show is aimed at tamariki and is touring the North Island from August. For more information check out the web-site.

The long awaited Marae Auahi Kore resource is nearly finished, and Auahi Kore tattoos have been ordered. They should be available late August.

Any question or ideas - please do not hesitate to contact TREVOR.

Bike Wise… (www.bikewise.co.nz)

Mid winter is quiet for Bike Wise, but we’re busy planning for the year ahead. I've had a few calls asking about the dates for Bike Wise Week next year – so grab those diaries and note February 15-23.

The Cycle Steering Committee (comprising HSC, NZ Police, LTSA, Cycling Support, Cycling New Zealand, BIANZ, SPARC and the Ministry of Health) has begun planning for the week. We will again be looking for national sponsors to provide product for Bike to Work Day on February 19. We’ll keep you posted on the outcome. The first Bike Wise Week newsletter should also land in your in-tray during the next few weeks.

For any further information about Bike Wise contact FELICITY.

SunSmart… (www.sunsmart.co.nz)

With the Cancer Society, we have decided to develop a fresh look for SunSmart this summer. We’ve asked several creative companies to offer their ideas, but regrettably our combined budgets may not accommodate a launch of all the communications strategies needed to put the SunSmart message back into the public consciousness. Nevertheless, we have decided to make a start, and, if necessary, roll it out over two seasons. Watch this space for further news.

Research

Last Chat Sheet we introduced our two new researchers, Kiri Milne and Ben Macrae, who join Andrew Waa to make up the HSC research team. Here are some of the key research projects underway:

Youth smoking
We have completed field work on the Youth Lifestyle Survey, a two-yearly study that monitors attitudes and behaviours related to smoking among adolescents. The survey explores lifestyle factors such as music, sporting and cultural interests that can be associated with smoking/not smoking behaviour among youth. During the next few months several reports based on results of this survey will be produced. For further information contact ANARU.

Auahi Kore events
Auahi Kore is associated with a range of Maori activities. Two key activities are Waka Ama and Kapa Haka. Earlier this year we conducted surveys at the national Waka Ama and Maori performing arts events. These surveys covered views about the events, Auahi Kore and smoking in general. Ben is writing reports for these surveys, summaries of which will be available at the Smokefree Conference in September. For further information contact BEN.

Quit and Win 2002
May 2002 saw New Zealand’s second Quit and Win competition. This year the competition was expanded to include five lower North Island regions. We have undertaken several research activities to evaluate how the 2002 competition went, including a survey of competition participants and interviews with people involved in organising the competition. Kiri is managing this research and information and results should be available soon. For further information contact KIRI.

Shopping list… (www.healthsponsorship.co.nz)

Merchandise
We have added Smokefree and Auahi Kore Bucket Hats to our merchandise. They are made of Navy Ripstock fabric, with a green sandwich trim. They are available in sizes 57,59 and 61 and cost $14.

The new tracksuit has proven very popular and we have sold out of lined small and medium pants. However, there are plenty of unlined ones left and they are $5 cheaper!

We also have a plentiful supply of the popular smokefree cafe aprons, priced at $19.
The new shipment of basketballs arrived, so there are plenty in stock. The next shipment of touch balls is about one month away.

Enclosed is our new merchandise pamphlet – read, enjoy and order! For further information contact Sharda.

Farewell
Jeremy Lambert leaves the HSC to join Huia Communications. Jeremy has worked on a part time or contract basis for us for several years and has pioneered the Quit & Win development in New Zealand.

Thanks for all your creativity and energy Jeremy – and remember, once a member of the Smokefree whanau, always a member!
