Front cover: Let’s Clear the Air in Sport poster, designed for World Smokefree Day. Please note that the poster and a similar postcard are available from HSC on an ongoing basis.

MAY 2002

Greetings from the team at HSC – we hope this Chat Sheet finds you all healthy and happy in your work. We are now in the full swing of the year’s programmes, and enjoying the challenges that 2002 is presenting.

World Smokefree Day is just around the corner (May 31) and the Quit and Win smoking cessation competition has attracted an enormous number of entries and interest. The winners will be announced on World Smokefree Day. Smokefree Sport is busy supporting winter sports codes, with “Play Breathe Live” advertisements going to air as well.

The Smokefree Stage Challenge and cokesmokefreerockquest are in full flight, and both events are proving increasingly popular with teens. It is wonderful, as the years go on, to see the young musicians who debut at these two events go on to achieve wider success with their music.

We’re delighted to introduce two new staff members – Kiri Milne and Ben Macrae. Kiri has recently completed a Masters in Geography at Auckland University, and will be working part-time. Ben, of Ngati Raukawa and Ngati Tuwharetoa, comes from Te Puni Kokiri, where he reported on health and employment outcomes for Maori. Kiri and Ben will work with Anaru Waa on research and evaluation.

Finally, a housekeeping matter. As we are nearing the end of the financial year, we ask that you send us any merchandise orders as soon as possible. We will try and process your order before June 30. We will be undertaking our stocktake as at 30 June and consequently the sale room will be closed for a couple of days around that time.

Smokefree… (www.smokefree.co.nz)

HSC, with the Cancer Society, Te Hotu Manawa Maori, the National Heart Foundation and The Asthma and Respiratory Foundation, is overseeing the production of a Smokefree/Auahi Kore teaching resource for Years 9 and 10. The resource includes a video, and should be in schools by the end of August. Unfortunately, our budget allows only one resource per school.

World Smokefree Day (May 31)
As mentioned, World Smokefree Day fast approaches. The world focus this year is ‘Tobacco Free Sports – Play It Clean’. In New Zealand, we will be promoting Smokefree Sport within the ‘Let’s Clear the Air’ campaign used for last year’s World Smokefree Day promotion. The Quit Group is co-ordinating the initiative, and HSC is providing sport-specific resources.

Quit and Win 2002
Entries for the Quit and Win smoking cessation competition closed on May 2, with 1795 entries received. This represents 1.8 percent of the smokers within New Zealand’s Quit and Win Region – well in excess of the international Quit and Win participation rate of 1.25 percent. Our thanks go to the five local co-ordinators and their support teams – Keita Brightwell (Tairawhiti), Wepiha Gemmell (Hawkes Bay), Tamara Higgs (Taranaki), Lauren Tamehana (Wanganui) and Skye Kimura (Manawatu).

National Smokefree Conference
This event takes place in Wellington on September 9 and 10, with “Clearing the Air – What’s Next?” as the theme. A researchers’ workshop will follow the conference on the morning of September 11. Registration forms have been distributed – if you have not received one, please contact AMANDA. Please note that if you register before July 20, you are eligible for a $30 discount on the registration fee.

The conference will review tobacco control activity during the past two years, and look at ways of moving forward. Keynote speakers will include Cathy Segan, a senior research officer for VicHealth Centre for Tobacco Control in Victoria, Australia.

Smokefree Sport

This is the new positioning for the Smokefree Sport programme. It features in the revised Smokefree Sport television commercial played during the last two months and will also screen during World Cup Soccer, All Black and Commonwealth Games television coverage. The positioning will be used across various code resources, the first of which is netball (see enclosed sample).

With increasing numbers of sports clubs adopting Smokefree policies, it seems the right time to establish a national database of these organisations. Would you please supply (preferably electronically) the details of all Smokefree/Auahi Kore sporting organisations in your area (please include name of organisation, address, contact person, phone numbers, email and any other relevant information, where possible). This will be an ongoing process, and we will try to provide updated lists several times a year. Please email details to MARIJA.

Netball remains a key focus for Smokefree Sport sponsorship. Local health providers in Northland, Bay of Plenty, Western, Eastern and Canterbury regions are doing a fantastic job in promoting the Smokefreemessage. New Smokefree/Auahi Kore policies are being developed at netball centre and club level, and we are identifying suitable role models in these regions to help deliver the message.

Rugby League’s Bartercard Cup is well underway, with trainers wearing Smokefree/Auahi Kore branded gear. New Zealand Rugby League is about to mail out Smokefree resources to all league clubs nationwide, encouraging them to look at their Smokefree policies. Rugby League is an important audience for Smokefree – please let us know of any in-roads you are making at club level.

We have two focuses for Hockey – development manager level, where our message has been integrated in the development programme, and hockey turfs, where we are working towards having all major grounds designated Smokefree.

We are evaluating strategies for our summer codes.

Finally – a word about resources. If you have developed any sport-specific resources, we would love a copy for our files. In future, there may be an opportunity to mass-produce an item of interest to a number of areas, saving money and duplication. Also, a reminder that if you wish to use Smokefree Sport logos, there are specific criteria to be adhered to, in the interest of brand integrity. Please contact MARIJA if you wish to reproduce our sports logos.

Smokefree Arts
( www.smokefreearts.co.nz)
Smokefree Arts has been quiet, following a hectic three months work around the 2002 New Zealand Festival. However we will be supporting student projects at Te Whaea - the National School of Dance and Drama between June and August.

The students must research, devise and negotiate their own sponsorship proposals to us for these projects. If they're successful, they will be required to manage the sponsorship themselves. In general, their proposals are well written, innovative and tuned to delivering the Smokefree message.

Smokefree Arts will be sponsoring another national tour by Mahinarangi Tocker and Charlotte Yates, following the release of their live-in-studio CD later this year. Mahinarangi and Charlotte are leading singer/songwriters with eight albums of original music between them. This tour will follow a similar path to the last - from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island. Dates have not been finalised, but we’ll let you know when they are. Contact FENN for any Smokefree Art enquires.

Auahi Kore Panui ... (www.auahikore.co.nz)

Nga mihi nui kia tatau e whai wahi nei ki te kaupapa Auahi Kore.

The Auahi Kore programme has developed a partnership with the Maori Language Commission and the first joint project is the upcoming celebration of the Maori New Year - 12 June 2002. An Auahi Kore/Smokefree maramataka/calendar has been produced and features sponsorships and partnerships supporting the kaupapa. A number of free calendars will be sent out during the next two weeks and they can also be purchased. Price, I hear you say? $10 - cheap for a quality Maori calendar.

The Auahi Kore website is being re-developed, with a members-only site providing access to the latest research, merchandise, resources, and a message board for all those great ideas. There’ll also be a re-vamped calendar of events. All you have to do is following the instructions!

For those of you that don’t already know, Dave Nuku is no longer at the Health Sponsorship Council. He has moved on to Hong Kong.

Any questions or ideas about Auahi Kore - please do not hesitate to contact TREVOR.

Smokefree Teens… (www.lungfish.co.nz)

The Teen music programme is in full swing, and both Smokefree Stage Challenge and cokesmokefreerockquest are proving fantastic forums for emerging youth talent. A huge thanks to those of you who continue to support these events in your regions. Find results to date attached.

The Smokefree Stage Challenge has easily become one of the premiere youth events on the cultural calender. 2002 is the 10th year that Smokefree has supported the Smokefree Stage Challenge as the major naming sponsor.

Although the event has only a five week national tour schedule each year, the Smokefree Stage Challenge has built itself a 12 month shelf life for the youth of New Zealand. This is made possible by the fantastic seven half hour TV2 specials in July and the fact that the following years ideas of performance begin their planning stages the day the current years performance ends.

Smokefree uses the Smokefree Stage Challenge as a platform to build a good rapport with youth and as an effective communication tool. The day of rehearsals leading up to the evening performance offers a fantastic space for this. Informal chatting, interaction and feedback is created in a very positive and hyped atmosphere. It is also a fantastic time to give away Smokefree and lungfish merchandise and take photos for the website – www.lungfish.co.nz. If you have any quesitions regarding this event, feel free to contact DONNA on donna@healthsponsorship.co.nz. Also check out photo’s from the event on www.lungfish.co.nz.

Bike Wise… (www.bikewise.co.nz)

May has been a busy month for Bike Wise, with Mountain Bike Jams taking place around the country. The events kicked off in Dunedin with more than 100 5-13 year olds zooming around Jubilee Park and through the surrounding bush. This was Dunedin’s first Mountain Bike Jam, and it was also the first Jam to have a 5-7 year old section. Mums and Dads either biked or ran the course with their children. Judging by the smiles on the faces of both generations, it appeared to be a popular addition to the Mountain Bike Jams.

Wellington, Christchurch, Auckland and Invercargill Mountain Bike Jams followed, and all these events had a huge growth in numbers. More than 1000 took part this year, compared with about 200 last year. The series will finish on 26 May with the inaugural Taupo event.

The Jams provide a unique opportunity for kids to take part in organised mountain bike events. All participants receive a medal, certificate, drink bottle and other sponsored goodies. It's a great opportunity for kids to practise their bike skills on challenging, yet achievable courses.

If you would like any further information, or if you have a great biking idea to share, please call FELICITY.

SunSmart… (www.sunsmart.co.nz)

HSC and the Cancer Society have committed to trying to raise the profile of SunSmart during the next few years, hopefully increasing the uptake of SunSmart behaviours. However, even if we combine our budgets, it is likely to take two years to put some of our strategies into place.

We are planning on gaining a presence on television once more and will be developing new advertisements. If these do not reach the screens this summer, they will definitely be screened during the 2003/2004 summer. We will keep you informed about progress on SunSmart issues.

Research and Evaluation

The HSC, with the Cancer Society of NZ and The Quit Group, is conducting its biennial Youth Lifestyle Survey (YLS) in 72 secondary schools. This survey began in 1995 and involves Year 10 and Year 12 students answering a self-completion questionnaire. It conforms as closely as possible to recommendations from a Ministry of Health endorsed scientific advisory committee on youth smoking surveys.

The YLS covers questions on smoking, ethnicity, income, expenditure, cultural, recreational and sporting interest, media use, awareness of Smokefree and Auahi Kore and self-concept. The results will provide information on youth smoking rates, and help inform the further development of youth-focused tobacco control interventions by the Council, Cancer Society and The Quit Group.

Initial results should be available by August, with further reports likely to be available during the next 12 months on specific issues. For further information contact ANARU.
