(www.smokefree.co.nz) The Smokefree Conference biggest and best yet!! The 2002 National Smokefree Conference held in Wellington on 9 - 10 September was the biggest yet with nearly 200 individuals registered for all or some part of the conference. Judging by the positive feedback and general vibes it was also the best yet. The conference started with a mihi whakatau by Amster Reedy and then the newly appointed Minister responsible for tobacco control, Damien O'Connor, made an opening address - his first speech as Minister with tobacco control responsibilities. The Minister congratulated the Smokefree community for past efforts but challenged us to get smoking rates under 20% within the next few years. The first day featured a keynote speech by Cynthia Hallett from California who showed how Smokefree legislation had developed there and how successful it has been, and also a speech by Cathy Segan from Melbourne on quitting research and issues. All those that attended enjoyed the social event at the end of the day. Day two featured a session led by the Health Sponsorship Council on promoting further change and included two presentations from regional Smokefree workers (Crown Public Health and Northland Health). This session energised everyone. The final keynote was by Moana Jackson who provided a very stimulating speech on achieving Maori health. Workshop sessions during each day allowed attendees to feed ideas back into the conference. The overall sentiment seemed to be that while there are still gaps that we need more funding for we also need to be making sure we are doing the best with what we have. Interestingly, coordination and communication within the Smokefree community was seen as being very important - so that we can all share our knowledge and support each other. The importance of having strong and effective legislation was reiterated. As a community we need to stress the necessity of a law change that will protect all workers from second hand smoke - this opportunity exists now and we must throw our energies behind achieving this while the opportunity exists. The conference left everyone buzzing and looking forward to the next one in 2004. Smokefree Sport Spring sees the wrap up and evaluation of winter codes in the Making Sport Smokefree programme, and planning for the summer ones. Thanks for your feedback on Smokefree Sport/Club initiatives happening around the country. In order for this information to be useful as a public relations tool for the whole Smokefree community, we need to add your Smokefree/Auahi Kore clubs to our DATABASE. Please send details of the Smokefree sports clubs/organisations in your region remember to include club/organisation name, postal address, contact person and phone number, Smokefree status (i.e. what areas are Smokefree), and whether it is a voluntary decision or legislated (i.e. a workplace). Contact MARIJA with this information. On the subject of clubs, we have Welcome to our Smokefree Club green metal signs for sale, please see attached price list for details. Smokefree Champs The final of the Smokefree Champs netball in Palmerston North on September 28 proved a true southern battle, with Canterbury beating Otago 50-36. The exciting game ended another positive season of association for netball and Smokefree the event showcased top regional netball talent from around the country and our brand received live television and significant amounts of other media exposure over the week. Positive role modelling was also highlighted. Just as importantly, the Smokefree Champs gives us a link to the regions, and access to the grassroots of the game. Its been great liaising with health providers in Northland, Bay of Plenty, Manawatu, Taranaki, Wanganui, Hawkes Bay, Canterbury and the West Coast. These people have worked with their local netball centres to promote the Smokefree kaupapa and help with policy writing and implementation. Thanks for all the hard work and outstanding achievements in some challenging regions. The aim of the regional netball programme is to normalise Smokefree attitudes and behaviours in netball settings. The work at grassroots level is helping to disperse the myth that Smokefree is a sponsor or giver of stuff and is focusing on the message and creating more Smokefree environments. We aim to work with the remaining netball entities during the 2003 season, and will be in touch with local providers in due course. SunSmart (www.sunsmart.co.nz) This summer will be an exciting one for SunSmart - theres a change of priority audience, a partnership between the HSC and the Cancer Society, and a number of activities planned to promote the sun safety message. The SunSmart programme includes research and evaluation, shade environments, sporting and community involvement and a communications campaign, which will include SunSmart Week activities. Resources, SunSmart promotions and community events are under negotiation and are close to being finalised SunSmart Communications Campaign The communications campaign is an exciting part of the SunSmart programme this year. The priority audience is families with children aged 12 and under. The campaign will feature:
And to spearhead all of this Tiger, our SpokesPrawn. A list of sponsorships and events will be available soon, and for any merchandise and resources contact WENDY or SHARDA. Smokefree Teens (www.lungfish.co.nz) Part of our strategy to positively position the Smokefree message with youth involves utilising relevant events as vehicles for the message. Smokefree Pacifica Beats 2002 The National Final for Smokefree Pacifica Beats was held in Wellington on September 6. This fantastic evening showcased some of the most talented high school Pacifica bands from around Aotearoa. Eight competing bands took to the stage, joining high-profile acts such as Che Fu, Nesian Mystik and King Kapisi. The results were:
All groups that commit to organising events will receive the following (approximate value $100):
If you would like to organise events in your area please contact FELICITY. Research
Interestingly, when compared to all survey participants, those participants who had stopped smoking for the full competition period were significantly more likely to have entered Quit and Win with the intention of stopping smoking completely. They were also more likely to have used nicotine replacement products and to view their nominated support person as important in their quit attempt. A follow-up of competition participants will be conducted in June 2003, to provide 12-month quit-rates. For more information contact KIRI.
