December 10 is a red-letter day for every New Zealander from that date the indoor areas of all workplaces and licensed premises (including bars, clubs and restaurants) must be Smokefree. Our staff are working with the Ministry of Health to develop communication strategies that will make the transition to the eagerly awaited Smokefree environments easy to understand. As a result of requests from health workers, we are also developing a press advertisement reminding people of the legislation implementation date. These will be available from the HSC, free of charge, by contacting MARIJA. If you would like to discuss anything to do with this project please contact MARIJA or SUSIE GREENE. Finally a housekeeping matter weve combined Smokefree Arts and Smokefree Sport under the new umbrella of Smokefree Community. This move aligns ours activities with our planning, and the way in which we report to Government. Smokefree (www.smokefree.co.nz) Smokefree Community We are pleased to welcome Kristal Hyde to the Smokefree Community team. Kristal will be known to many of you from her work with the Auahi Kore programme. She begins her new role in October and will work closely with Marija, with an initial focus on sport and second-hand smoke. Smokefree Community Smokefree Homes The Smokefree Homes campaign will continue on TV to early October, at which time it will pause until February. This is due to the focus between November and January on the Smokefree legislative changes, and also to escalating media costs as Christmas approaches. Smokefree Community Smokefree Sport ... (www.smokefreesport.co.nz) The legislation fact sheet for sports clubs, being produced with the Ministry of Health, is being finalised. A copy will be posted to PHUs and authorised resource providers upon completion (early September). You will be able to order copies for distribution among your sporting fraternity. For more information about communication through the sporting community, please contact MARIJA. COVER: New Smokefree Sport netball poster. As Smokefree indoor settings become mandatory, we will generally move away from the sponsorship model to create Smokefree environments. We will continue to support organisations that support the kaupapa, but suggest that we should be sending a consistent message out about sponsorship in sporting settings. Again, please contact MARIJA if you would like to discuss further. The Effects of Tobacco Smoke on Sporting Performance sheet has been updated and is now a bilingual resource (see enclosure). These are available at $30 for 200. For a full list of Smokefree Sport resources, go to www.smokefreesport.co.nz/resources Smokefree Community - Smokefree Arts... smokefreearts.co.nz Smokefree Arts is supporting Christchurch group 'the clinic' with the Smokefree clinic tour of The Peculiar Case of Clara Parsons. This work stunned audiences at the Christchurch Arts Festival (2003) - reviewers described it as a quixotic, eccentric, inventive, strangely fascinating excursion through madness, loss and love (The Press, Christchurch) and Mesmerising one of the highlights of this year's [Christchurch Arts] festival (The NZ Listener). The work mixes technology and theatre as 'the clinic' unravels a universal tale of love, betrayal and madness. It uses three rotating video projectors, three performers, 12 speakers, animations and a sound environment created by leading electronic artist Leyton. The Peculiar Case of Clara Parsons has toured Christchurch Wellington, Hamilton and Auckland and appears at the Otago Festival of the Arts from September 28 - October 2. Many thanks to all health providers who have helped deliver the Smokefree message in their area with 'the clinic'! Auahi Kore Panui ... (www.auahikore.co.nz) The Auahi Kore programme has been steaming ahead and I am really wondering where the year has gone, as we move into September. The Matariki Wallplanner, incorporating the images from the Maramataka, has been distributed. The Auahi Kore team has received some great ideas from the community for additional resources around Matariki, especially helping to give our tamariki and rangitahi a greater understanding of this event. It has also been suggested, and we agree, that our timeline should be adjusted so that resources are available earlier in May. We have a number of projects underway. Auahi Kore is working with Heidi (Smokefree Youth) to develop a strategy specifically for rangatahi celebrating being Maori and being Auahi Kore. This campaign will utlise the Auahi Kore: Honohono Ki Te Whakapapa logo, which was designed by rangitahi for rangitahi. In consultation with a number of Auahi Kore health promoters, HSC and Te Hotu Manawa Maori are moving towards the second draft of the Auahi Kore Marae document. A thank you goes to Adele Morunga Hamilton, Co-ordinator Auahi Kore Marae- Tai Tokerau, Hauora O Te Tai Tokerau, for her participation and feedback in this process. The Auahi Kore team has also been developing and strengthening the messages associated with the programme as part of our communications plan. We are looking to create a greater media presence for the kaupapa, especially through print media. You may have also seen some recently subtle product placement. Auahi Kore merchandise has been worn and shown on the July cover of Tumai magazine, featuring Marina Sciasica. TV3s Sportaz and Maori Television have both featured members of the Kia Maatara Ultimate Team and on TV2s Mai Time the rangitahi R&B group Ko Au performed wearing Auahi Kore merchandise. We recently had a Auahi Kore programme and social marketing session with Blenheim tobacco controllers. This was a great exchange of information and it provided excellent ideas for the programme. If your community would like a similar session, please let MERE know. Smokefree Youth (www.lungfish.co.nz) One strategy of Smokefree Youth is to increase the use of role modelling to promote the Smokefree message. We are asking youth publications to include questions relating to smoking/health in their interviews. This was achieved successfully in the September issue of Crème magazine (pages 16, 30, 68). If a variety of publications agree to this strategy we can access a wide range of role-models. Their comments will contribute to normalising Smokefree behaviours and attitudes among our youth. The first of the 2004 Smokefree WOWquest events was held in Nelson recently and was a great success. About 200 students took part in the production based on the World of WearableArt concept. Each performance combined audio tracks, themes, choreography, dance, lighting and student-designed and constructed costumes and sets. Two feature garments are allowed per performance, and these are judged for eligibility for display in the WOW Awards. The event is Smokefree, and a strong Smokefree presence exists through banner placement and MC endorsement. This event contributes to youth programme objectives by developing teen self-esteem, normalising Smokefree attitudes and behaviours and linking positive social outcomes to being Smokefree. This year regional finals will be held for Smokefree Pacifica Beats a first! The high profile Samoan duo Adeaze has been secured as guest band and is expected to attract a sizeable audience at the regional and national final events. These R&B brothers recently released an album and were winners of the Pacifica Beats section of Rockquest in 1997. Adeaze has a reputation in the music industry for being kind and humble, and many of the duos lyrics promote positive lifestyles and safe communities. TVNZ, through Mai Time Maori Programmes, will again produce the event for screening on TV2. Mai Time will provide presenters for both the regional and national events, and will advertise the programme before it screens. Smokefree Pacifica Beats meets the specific needs of at-risk groups and ensures Maori youth are equitably reflected in levels of participation and positive impact of Youth Programme activity. As mentioned in the last Chatsheet, the HSC is overseeing a Reducing Smoking Initiation project. A draft literature review has been circulated to the Review Committee (comprised of researchers and tobacco control workers) and a final version is expected to be completed by Friday 3 September. The aim of the literature review is to identify interventions that contribute to reducing smoking initiation. The information will be used in the development of a draft future directions for reducing smoking initiation document which will be presented at the Smokefree Conference in September. Please dont hesitate to contact HEIDI for further information on the youth programme. Bike Wise (www.bikewise.co.nz) Bike Wise Week Grab your pens and make a note - Bike Wise Week is 12-20 February 2005. Planning is underway and you can expect to receive the first update during September. Bike Wise International Junior Cycle Tour Bike Wise is once again supporting the International Junior Tour - to be held in and around Wanganui, September 24 to 26. As the only tour for Under-19s in this country, the tour attracts many of our up-and-coming cyclists. Many of the young men representing New Zealand at the Olympics have competed in the tour in the past. It also has an international flavour, with Australian teams expected to compete again this year. Prior to the event, Bike Wise visits primary schools to promote the tour and talk about cycle safety and cycle maintenance. If you would like to be included in this schedule then please contact FELICITY. SunSmart (www.sunsmart.co.nz) Communications Campaign (Tiger the Prawn) For the third summer running Tiger the SunSmart Spokesprawn will front our communications campaign. The same two television commercials will start on October 26 (Labour Weekend), and radio ads will run from just after Christmas until the end of the school holidays. Newspaper advertisements will be placed during SunSmart Week (November 14 to 20). Ultraviolet Index (UVI) Promotion The Ultraviolet Index will once more be used as part of media weather forecasts this summer. The graphics have been improved following a debrief with media after last summers introduction, and we are confident the UVI will be used even more widely by media this year. Tv media are not likely to start using the UVI in their forecasts until Labour weekend. Newspapers will probably start earlier, possibly October 1. Website (www.sunsmart.co.nz) The website is a key information source and is being updated at the moment. For any information or feedback contact WENDY at either wendy@healthsponsorship.co.nz or wendy.billingsley@cancer.org.nz, or phone HSC: 04 472 7222, Cancer Soc: 04 494 7270, mobile: 021 176 7563. Research and Evaluation Unit The research team has been busy with youth research, including pre-testing of poster concepts encouraging young people not to smoke, involvement with the smoking initiation project and the implementation of the Youth Lifestyle Study (YLS) 2004. The YLS takes place every two years. It aims to collect in-depth data on youth smoking trends over time in New Zealand, key variables related to stakeholder programmes (such as brand awareness and perceptions) and internationally comparable data. ASH has also conducted youth smoking surveys for a number of years. This year we are working together to deliver the YLS and ASH surveys simultaneously. This process will reduce the burden on schools that participate in the surveys. It will also make better use of resources. We look forward to sharing our reports from the YLS with you during the coming months. Kiri and Julie will present research findings on the Smokefree Homes campaign and perceptions of SHS at the Smokefree conference. Shopping list (www.healthsponsorship.co.nz) The new merchandise web-site is up and running I hope it will be a useful tool for making your purchasing decisions. Sometime ago Canterbury discontinued the lycra babe tee, and replaced it with a 100% cotton tapered womens tee available in black or white at a cost of $21. It has a very flattering shape - not as body hugging as the lycra babe tees. No doubt many door mats and umbrellas would have taken flight during our recent horrendous storms. Fortunately we have ample supplies in stock. Make sure you are prepared in the event of another. For those of you attending the Smokefree Conference I will have a merchandise stall with a few new items and also some discounted ones. See you there. Happy shopping all!
