WALKING AND CYCLING
While gains are being made to ensure walking and cycling continue to be popular leisure activities, New Zealanders are walking and cycling less for transport. The decline in the day-to-day use of physical transport modes such as walking and cycling is impacting on:
The level of physical activity within the population.
The safety of those who continue to walk and cycle.
The environment.
All of these areas have health as well as transport consequences.
Many trips undertaken by New Zealand households are for relatively short distances. Many of these trips used to be undertaken by walking or by cycle, but are increasingly being undertaken in private motor vehicles.
It is estimated that in 1998, after factoring in population growth, New Zealanders undertook approximately 400,000 fewer journeys solely on foot per day than in 1990.
Between 1990 and 1998, the number of cycling trips in New Zealand household travel reduced by 39%.
The decline in both walking and cycling as forms of household travel is most apparent among the young.
